World Heritage Sites and National Parks to Tour in Queensland, Australia

Queensland is home to 5 unique World Heritage Sites, all of which are worth visiting:

The Great Barrier Reef

Located in the warm, sparkling clear waters off the northeast Australian coast, the Great Barrier Reef is one of the most enchanting destinations you’re likely to ever experience. It is alive with coral, fish and other marine life including porpoises, dolphins, whales, jellyfish, molluscs and sea turtles.

Within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, you’ll find the Whitsundays, a series of islands including Whitsunday Island, Hamilton Island, Dent Island and others. These islands are popular sailing destinations, and some of them also have accommodations for visitors available.

Fraser Island

If you’d enjoy having a wilderness adventure, it’s worth making the trip to Fraser Island. The island’s pristine shores are composed of pure silica sand, which forms glorious dunes. Amazingly, a lush rainforest also grows in Fraser Island’s sands. That’s a sight you’re unlikely to see anywhere else in the world. Transportation on the island is by 4WD, and 4WD tours are available.

The Wet Tropics of Queensland

There are numerous interesting sights to see in the Wet Tropics of Queensland. Of particular note, the Cape Tribulation area has lovely beaches and a remarkable environment in which the rainforest meets the shore.

Within the tropics region, you’ll also find the Daintree Rainforest. There are many things to do in the area, including taking a cruise down the Daintree River, beach walking, taking rainforest walks or visiting the nearby tropical rainforest village of Kuranda.

If you’d like to travel between Cairns and Kuranda, there are a couple of unusual ways to make the trip. One of your choices is the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway, and the other is the Kuranda Scenic Railway. Getting there is half the fun – but once you’re in Kuranda, you’ll find numerous options for things to do. You can trek through the jungle, check out an Australian butterfly sanctuary, go mini-golfing in the rainforest or pick up souvenirs in the area’s chic shops and galleries.

The Gondwana Rainforests and the Riversleigh Region in Outback, Queensland are two other noteworthy World Heritage sites to consider visiting while you’re in Australia.

Cairns

Cairns is a holidaymaker’s hotspot thanks to its close proximity to the Great Barrier Reef and the rainforest. If you want to enjoy all the conveniences a contemporary city has to offer, while still being close enough to take day trips to the World Heritage sites, Cairns would be an ideal jumping-off point for beginning your holiday.

Port Douglas

If you want to visit the most photo-worthy destination in Queensland, Port Douglas is a strong contender for that distinction. The local terrain includes sandy beaches, blue waters and lush rainforest vegetation.

Brisbane

The Brisbane River divides this city and lends a scenic charm to its central business district, known as the CBD. A Brisbane River cruise would be an ideal introduction to this area of Queensland.
