  • When is your trip?

If you want to experience one of the most awe-inspiring displays of marine life existing anywhere on planet earth, try submerging yourself in the waters off the northeastern coast of Australia, near Queensland. This is the location of the Great Barrier Reef, an aquatic world filled with colourful natural wonders. Fish, whales, dolphins, porpoises and sea turtles swim in the crystalline waters of this magnificent coral reef. This is also the ideal place to study a vast variety of molluscs.

If visiting this unique underwater world is of interest to you, it’s worth considering a Great Barrier Reef Tour or reef cruise. Read on for details on what you could expect from a Great Barrier Reef experience.

Things to Do in and Around the Great Barrier Reef

There are many fun and entertaining things to do in the Great Barrier Reef and the surrounding areas including the cities of Cairns and Port Douglas. When visiting the reef, swimming, snorkelling and scuba diving are several of the most popular activities.

For those who aren’t so athletically inclined, there are a couple of other ways to view marine life. You could take a glass-bottom boat tour, or you could board a semi-submersible submarine and view the scenery through its windows. Travelling aboard either sort of vessel allows you to safely view portions of the reef without having to actually get wet. These are especially fantastic options for non-swimmers and for people whose children are too small to snorkel or scuba dive.

There are also heaps of options for other types of boat tours and boating activities in the Great Barrier Reef. You could enjoy kayaking, rafting, sailing or sport fishing in this area, or take a cruise to the outer reef aboard a pontoon boat. Jet skiing is another fun option to consider.

Cairns Day Tours

Several cities, including Cairns, are close to the Great Barrier Reef. Cairns is a worthwhile destination on its own, offering visitors many amusing things to see and do. One of the attractions is a vibrant central business district (CBD) featuring many opportunities to see live music, shop at the markets, and sample the cuisine at local restaurants.

One of the most popular day trips from Cairns is a cruise to Green Island, which is one of the numerous small coral cays in the waters surrounding the Great Barrier Reef. This beautiful island offers a resort, coral and sand beaches, and a vibrant rainforest in the island’s interior. This is a fantastic spot to go snorkelling or take a dive course. The waters surrounding this island are an outstanding place to view sea turtles and other creatures.

Fitzroy Island is another viable day trip destination near Cairns. This island is noteworthy for impressive bushwalking tracks.

The Daintree Rainforest is a World Heritage site located about 125 km from Cairns. This destination is worth visiting if you’re interested in trekking through the jungle to see spectacular natural views, along with beautiful striated herons, striking azure kingfishers, saltwater crocodiles and a variety of other creatures.

Cape Tribulation is a unique spot where the Daintree Rainforest touches the Great Barrier Reef. Cape Tribulation’s beaches are some of the loveliest local spots to enjoy a swim and a picnic.

Port Douglas

If you consider great beaches to be a high-priority part of your Great Barrier Reef holiday, you might want to consider visiting Port Douglas instead of, or in addition to, Cairns. Port Douglas is noteworthy for its sandy beaches including Four Mile Beach, Wonga Beach and Palm Cove.
